Our Lady visited Bernadette 151 years ago today

On this day in 1858, at the grotto at Massabielle near Lourdes in the Pyrenees of southern France, Our Lady appeared to Bernadette Soubirous, a poor, plain peasant girl who had gone there to gather firewood. Bernadette would have the privilege to encounter the Lady there 17 more times.

Our Lady revelaed herself to Bernadette as the Immaculate Conception, a term unknonwn to Bernadette -- proof that the young girl was not fabricating a story.

When Bernadette dug in the ground at a spot designated by Our Lady, a spring started to flow. Those are healing waters, the source for miracles that continue today.

Lourdes is the world's most famous modern shrine to Our Lady.

The National Shrine Grotto of Lourdes in Emmitsburg, Maryland, is the oldest known replica of the French shrine.
